Technical Writing Workshop
A Hit Parade of Common Grammatical and Stylistic Errors
Why you need it
An important goal of academic writing and scientific research is publication, which means that technical writing is an integral part of a scientific profession.
Poor writing can—and often does—prevent or delay the publication of good science.
How it works
Based on the “Top Ten” most common errors, this practical hands-on workshop asks participants to examine and improve typical text excerpts from actual scientific manuscripts.
The workshop is aimed at proficiency-level writers of technical, scientific or academic English.
Half-day workshop with afternoon one-on-one sessions.
What it will do for you
Tailored in-house technical writing workshop targets your institution's specific field, technical vocabulary and needs.
Class size is limited to 20 participants to ensure an interactive workshop situation with plenty of individual attention.
What participants say
“As a journal editor, I wish every author could take this workshop. That would make my life easier and get their papers published much faster.”

Professional layout and graphic design
You put time and effort into creating presentations, posters, flyers and more. If you really want to engage your audience and hold their attention, your graphics must be persuasive, visually appealing and -- most of all -- easy to understand. Think you're already doing that? Think again!
This half-day workshop will
-
Outline the four basic layout principles to make you a better graphic designer and digital artist,
-
Review presentation basics
("Say it, don't display it"), -
Hook you up with a wealth of image resources,
-
Provide a toolbox of Tips & Tricks to improve your presentation slides, including creating videos from your slide deck to post online.
Optional afternoon session
-
One-on-one: Bring a sample of your own .ppt or .keynote file or any other piece of graphic design and we'll examine it together.
Email best practices
Few things annoy your colleagues more than long emails that fail to get to the point. Hijacked discussion threads, inappropriate subject lines and other suboptimal habits waste time and alienate your reader. Make your emails clear, concise and effective with the Tips & Tricks we'll examine in this workshop.
This 2-hour workshop will
-
Show you how best to structure your emails
Tip: Put your request or invitation right up front, -
Give you hands-on practice in shortening and clarifying email texts,
-
Outline the best practices of business email etiquette,
-
Examine how to improve your email signature as a component of corporate identity,
-
Cover the main Dos and Don'ts of effective business emails.
How to structure a manuscript
Whether you're writing for a peer-reviewed journal, a conference proceedings or a university, you need to follow some basic conventions of academic writing for structuring your text.
This half-day workshop will
-
Cover conventional guidelines and show you how to avoid common errors,
-
Offer practical suggestions for achieving success when writing and submitting manuscripts,
-
Give you useful resources of publishers' requirements, i.e. IEEE, AIP, ACS, Springer, Elsevier etc.
-
Help you streamline the process and show especially novice authors how to negotiate the publication process.
Optional afternoon session
-
One-on-one: Bring a sample of your own work and we'll examine it together.
